GUIDE深度 · Deep dive
Base64 Is Not Encryption
Base64 changes representation only; it provides no key or confidentiality. Base64-encoding a password or API key protects nothing. Use encryption such as TLS or AES and manage keys.
Encoding vs encryption
Encoding is for transport or storage and is reversible by anyone.
Encryption needs a key and aims at confidentiality.
Base64 inside JWTs
JWT headers and payloads are Base64URL-encoded, not encrypted; do not put secrets there.
A signature ensures integrity, not confidentiality.
FAQ
Does Base64 compress?
No; it usually grows by about 33 percent.
Is Base64 still needed with HTTPS?
HTTPS encrypts transport; Base64 is still used for text protocols and embedding.
